Written by Anumeha Yadav and illustrated and designed entirely by Spitting Image - Our Rice Tastes of Spring highlights the importance of preserving traditional farming practices and indigenous local rice varieties. Following the story of Jinid’s family, we learn that rice is not just food - it is tradition, life and love for the farmer and forest communities that nurture the paddy crop in the fields of Chhotanagpur region of Jharkhand. Based on Anumeha’s extensive research in the region, the book is a critique of the quick-fix tech solutions to food security.
Art directed by Sandhya Visvanathan, this book uses a painterly mixed-media approach to the illustration style, using photographs from the author as a reference. We designed the characters of Jinid’s grandmother based on the village elders who shared their knowledge with Anumeha during her stay there.
